Where and What is Bidadari?
Located in between Woodleigh, Potong Pasir, and Bartley spreads across 93 hectares and 12 BTO developments split into four distinctive districts - Alkaff, Bartley Heights, Park Edge, and Woodleigh.
The Bidadari estate master plan, envisioned to be a “Community in a Garden”, is a World Gold award winner at the prestigious FIABCI World Prix d’Excellence Awards.
As of 2024, at least 8,872 flats have been planned and are estimated to be fully occupied by 2025.
When launched, interest in the BTO flats were so popular that some flats were up to 75x over-subscribed for second timers. The popularity can be due to its central location coupled with nearby amenities, with easy access to MRT stations like Woodleigh, Potong Pasir, and Bartley.
The Bidadari area is also an area with huge historical significance, going back to as far as the 19th century.
Centuries before Singapore’s independence, the Bidadari area has already been one of rich historical significance.
The name “Bidadari” was attained from a grand residence that was built around 1855 - 1861 by an English businessman, Mr Henry Minchen Simons. In Malay, Bidadari translates into “angel” or “fairy”.
The Bidadari residence was later sold to Wan Abu Bakar bin Daing Ibrahim, who became the Sultan of Johor later on. Eventually, the residence was demolished to make way to be a final resting grounds of many others from the early 20th century.
Between 1907 - 1972, various notable figures in Singapore’s history were laid to rest in the Bidadari area, including prominent Chinese community leader Dr Lim Boon Keng (of which the MRT station was named after), and Minister of Health and Minister of Labour, Mr Ahmad Bin Ibrahim. What was of greater significance was that the cemetery catered for Muslims, Christians, and Hindus - a nod towards the welcoming of diverse races and religions in the Bidadari estate.
Between 2004 - 2019, after the relocation of the cemetery, the Bidadari Garden was open to the public as a memorial garden. Today, Bidadari serves as a home for over 6,000 households and growing, with the 93ha Bidadari estate envisioned to be a ‘Community in a Garden’.
